BEFORE
DURING AND AFTER WATERLOO
CLASS
ASSIGNMENT II (optional)
While I am reading through various accounts – both primary and secondary –
of the period 1809-1817 or so I find some very interesting and unusual spots
where a good story could be set. For example, when British Foreign
Minister Castlereagh went to the Continent in early 1814 to negotiate with the
Coalition partners, he was accompanied by aides, an interesting role for a
hero. The war was still raging and the negotiators had to move several times to
keep out of the way of the armies.
Another person who was there, and reported to her uncle, the Duke of Wellington
was Priscilla Wellesley-Pole Fane, Lady Burghersh, later the Countess of
Westmorland. [see https://archive.org/details/cu31924027900145]
Who else might have been there? Besides Prince Metternich, for example,
who also had a retinue with him. Lots of opportunities for clandestine
meetings?
If you find such interesting spots for a novel, feel free to share them,
if you wish. On the other hand, maybe you want to stop taking this class and
write a novel with the setting you’ve found. Go for it!
